Greater Jakarta: Mother and son drown in Angke River

A

woman named Atih, 38, and her 5-year-old son Fahri reportedly drowned at Polor sluice gate in the Angke River in Kembangan, West Jakarta, on Tuesday.

Kembangan Police chief Sukatma said that according to a witness, the accident occurred at around 6 a.m., when Atih was driving a motorcycle with Fahri. The motorcycle drifted and hit an iron barrier on a bridge, causing Fahri to fall into the river.

'€œAtih jumped in after her son to try and save him,'€ he said as quoted by kompas.com on Tuesday.

He said the son was found dead a few hundred meters from the site of the accident at 7 a.m., but the mother was still missing, with a search and rescue team and police officers still looking for her as of Tuesday afternoon.
