New flash: Govt launches drive to conserve water

The Public Works and Public Housing Ministry recently held a water conservation drive and tree-planting movement to celebrate this year'€™s World Water Day that falls on March 22.

The ministry invited people to care for the much-needed water resources.

'€œLet'€™s join hands to care for our water. Don'€™t leave tears for the next generations. Let'€™s jointly conserve our water resources,'€ said Moedijadi, director general of water resources at the Public Works and Public Housing Ministry, at Hotel Indonesia in Jakarta recently.

The celebration of World Water Day was attended by 100 people. They signed a petition to demonstrate their commitment to preserving water resources. The campaign was also enlivened by a musical show featuring talented staff from the Public Works and Public Housing Ministry.

Apart from the campaign, the Public Works and Public Housing Ministry, also held a tree-planting movement simultaneously in several public halls of the Public Works and Public Housing Ministry spread across cities in Indonesia.

According to Minister Basuki Hadimulyono, the tree-planting movement that started in 2010 was aimed at raising public awareness about the importance of planting and maintaining trees. '€œPlanting tress can increase the extent of quality green space,'€ he said.

World Water Day, held annually, has served as a means of focusing attention on the importance of freshwater and advocating for the sustainable management of freshwater resources.

An international day to celebrate freshwater was recommended at the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED). The United Nations General Assembly responded by designating March 22, 1993 as the first World Water Day.
