quake measuring 5.8 on the Richter scale jolted Gorontalo province in Sulawesi, following a milder tremor that hit Manokwari, West Papua, hours earlier on Sunday morning.
In Manokwari, panicked citizens rushed to get out of their houses at 3:30 a.m. local time when the magnitude 4.7 quake hit the city.
Manokwari Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) recorded the epicenter of the quake was in the sea, some 41 kilometers northwest of Manokwari.
Hours later, at 6:28 a.m. local time, the 5.8-scale tremor hit Gorontalo.
"Earthquakes occurred many times lately, but this time is the biggest one and has forced us to rush out of our houses in panic," said citizen Yuliana as quoted by Antara news agency.
Gorontalo BMKG recorded the epicenter of the quake was at 111 kilometers beneath the sea, located at a latitude of 0.45 degrees north and a longitude of 122.02 degrees east, or 40 kilometers northwest of Boalemo regency in Gorontalo. (+++++)
