3 pretrial hearings delayed after request from KPK: legal team

C

orruption Eradication Commission (KPK) legal bureau head Chatarina Mulya Girsang said the postponement of three pretrial hearings that the antigraft body was scheduled to face at the South Jakarta District Court on Monday was due to administrative problems and based on the commission'€™s requests.

The court decided to delay the pretrial hearing requested by graft suspect and former religious affairs minister Suryadharma Ali concerning the KPK team'€™s failure to bring an original authority letter to the hearing.

'€œThe judge postponed Suryadharma'€™s pretrial hearing as the clerk of the court had not yet completed the legalization process of the letter,'€ said Chatarina as quoted by Antara news agency in Jakarta on Monday.

She also said the KPK had sent letters to the court, requesting the postponement of pretrial hearings requested by two other graft suspects, namely Hadi Poernomo and Suroso Atmomartoyo.

'€œFor the Hadi and Suroso cases, we have officially requested that the court not schedule the pretrial hearings on the same date,'€ Chatarina said.

The KPK named Hadi, the former Supreme Audit Agency head, a suspect for allegedly misusing his authority when he asked the taxation director general to approve Rp 5.7 trillion (US$438.9 million) in tax objections filed by Indonesia'€™s biggest private bank, Bank Central Asia (BCA).

The commission named Suroso, PT Pertamina'€™s former processing director, a suspect in a bribery case to smooth the tetraethyl lead (TEL) supply contracts related to Pertamina in 2004-2005, popularly known as the Innospec graft case.

Suryadharma was named a suspect in an alleged graft case surrounding the 2012-2013 haj pilgrimage program.

Chatarina said the commission also asked the court to postpone Hadi'€™s pretrial hearing to give the KPK enough time to study his pretrial materials, prepare adequate evidence and coordinate witnesses to testify at the hearing.

'€œFor the Hadi case, we received the court'€™s summons letter less than one week before the scheduled hearing. To prepare evidence and coordinate with witnesses or experts, who will appear in court, we need at least two weeks,'€ said Chatarina.

The court delayed Suryadharma'€™s pretrial hearing to Tuesday and Suroso's pretrial hearing to April 6. Hadi'€™s hearing was postponed for two weeks to April 13. (ebf)(+++)
