ank Indonesia (BI) governor Agus Martowardojo says the public requires an explanation of the fuel management system so it can understand why fuel prices fluctuate.
'We need to better explain [the fuel management system] to members of public so they can understand. I think this is our shared responsibility,' he said as quoted by Antara news agency in Jakarta on Monday.
On Friday, the government officially announced that the prices of Premium fuel and diesel had been increased by Rp 500 (4 US cents) per liter each.
For areas outside Bali, Java and Madura, the new price of Premium is set at Rp 7,300 per liter from the previous Rp 6,800. Diesel is now selling at Rp 6,900 per liter from Rp 6,400.
Meanwhile, in Bali, Java and Madura, the price of Premium was increased to Rp 7,400 per liter from Rp 6,900, while diesel was now selling at Rp 6,900 from the previous level of Rp 6,400.
Agus said the world's oil price fluctuations were also influenced by political turmoil, such as Saudi Arabia's military operations in Yemen.
'The attack has had an impact on the global oil price, but the recent fuel price increase in Indonesia is still at a manageable level,' said Agus.
The central bank governor said he was sure that compared to the previous system, the current fuel price system in Indonesia was healthier as it created fiscal room that could be used to develop infrastructure and make poor people more prosperous.
'We should not stop trying to explain the fuel price system in Indonesia to the people,' said Agus. (ebf)(+++)
