Your letters: Cradle-to-cradle for energy efficiency

T

his letter below is in reference to an article titled '€œSMEs urged to be more energy efficient,'€ (The Jakarta Post, March 25).

Indonesia has two main objectives in its energy goal: first, to see energy consumption growth slower than GDP growth in 2025 and secondly, to reduce industrial energy intensity with the target about 1 percent per year until 2025. There are at least three sectoral energy-saving potentials that may help to avoid wasteful energy use in Indonesia, namely industry, commercial buildings and households.

The industry sector requires a large amount of primary materials, thus what we should be targeting in order to achieve energy efficiency is to reduce primary-material consumption efficiently by enhancing our recycling efforts. If we reduce the consumption of primary materials such as paper, steel or glass, it will directly reduce the amount of industrial energy consumption.

Recycling is one economically viable effort since we don'€™t want to lose money trying to save money. However, we are no longer in the era that we are only able to redesign a product when it is already worn out, such as tearing apart an old bicycle to recycle the tires andusing the saddle for another purpose, for example.

The cradle-to-cradle method is more effective now. It refers to a regenerative system of recycling in which we may refurbish worn out things into things that might be used in the same or different cycle, or in other words, waste-free. The implementation of cradle-to-cradle business transforms recycled paper into another paper-based product. For example, they process the recycled paper into fluting paper as the main material of cardboard boxes, instead of using paper pulp, which causes deforestation.

With this training program for Indonesian SMEs initiated by TUV SUD Indonesia, the need to put cradle-to-cradle into practice should be considered since we must begin to shift our approach from '€œreduce, reuse, recycle'€ into '€œeco-effective'€ as a part of our forward-thinking behavior
