15 names proposed to fill top posts at energy ministry

T

he Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry has proposed as many as 15 professionals to fill its top five positions and is currently waiting for President Joko '€œJokowi'€ Widodo'€™s approval.

The selected candidates have been through the selection process that was open to the public since late last year. Candidates include incumbents and officials from other institutions outside the Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry as well as incumbents and former officers of companies operating in the energy and mining sectors.

In a proposal sent to the President, the ministry recommended three candidates for each of the five posts.

'€œWe are happy that the selection committee came up with good names. Whoever among these three names for each post ends up being selected, I will be relieved because they are good people,'€ Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Sudirman Said said concerning the short-listed candidates.

The ministry kicked off the open selection in December last year as part of an attempt to improve good corporate governing practices in the ministry, which has been under pressures following several corruption cases in the past. The open selection process is also part of the minister'€™s promise to improve the integrity of the ministry'€™s top officials following the disclosure of serious corruption scandals within the ministry.

Former energy and mineral resources minister Jero Wacik is currently being tried for his alleged involvement in corruption at the ministry. In April, last year, the Jakarta Corruption Court sentenced former Upstream Oil and Gas Regulatory Task Force (SKK Migas) chief Rudi Rubiandini to seven years in prison and ordered him to pay Rp 200 million (US$15,300) in fines for his involvement in corruption.

The five high-level positions currently vacant are the director general of oil and gas, the director general for mineral and coal, the director general for electricity, the director general of new-renewable and conservation of energy and the secretary-general at the National Energy Council.

Among the candidates who are currently serving as officials in the Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry are Edi Prasodjo (mineral director at the mineral and coal directorate general), IGN Wiratmaja Puja (acting director general for oil and gas), Jarman (incumbent director general of electricity), Rida Mulyana (incumbent director general for new-renewable and conservation of energy) and current expert staff for the ministry Said Didu.

The president director of PT Pertagas Niaga, Jugi Prajogio, and the former director for upstream at PT Pertamina, Muhamad Husen, are also on the list.
