Heavy winds sweep Germany, disrupt transport

H

eavy winds have caused disruption to transport across Germany, prompting the national railway to suspend services in part of the country and forcing flight delays and cancellations.

Railway operator Deutsche Bahn on Tuesday stopped all local trains in North Rhine-Westphalia state, Germany's most populous, which includes Cologne and Duesseldorf.

It also halted most long-distance services in Bavaria as falling trees damaged overhead electric wires. Police said part of Munich's central station was evacuated because of storm damage to the roof, news agency dpa reported. Several flights were canceled in Frankfurt and Hamburg.

In the eastern German town of Gross Santersleben, a man was killed when a concrete wall damaged by the storm fell on top of him, police said. (*****)
