Mexico applies new security measures for commercial flights

M

exican officials have announced new measures that would prevent a pilot from being left alone in the cockpit in the wake of a German airliner's crash in France.

Civil Aviation Director Gilberto Lopez Meyer said Monday that going forward there must be two trained personnel in the cockpit at any time. If a pilot needs to leave the cockpit, another crew member must enter the cockpit to help open the door when the pilot returns.

The co-pilot on a Germanwings flight from Barcelona, Spain to Dusseldorf, Germany, was alone in the cockpit on March 24 when the plane slammed into the French Alps, killing 150 people. Investigators have said it appears he did so intentionally, while the plane's captain was locked out of the cockpit. (***)
