Jokowi to explain Budi'€™s nomination withdrawal to House: Minister

P

resident Joko '€œJokowi'€ Widodo will directly explain the reasons behind the withdrawal of the nomination of Comr.Gen.Budi Gunawan as National Police chief in a meeting with the House of Representatives expected to take place on Thursday or next Monday, a senior minister has said.

'€œHe is preparing supporting material for his explanation,'€ Coordinating Political, Legal and Security Affairs Minister Tedjo Edhy Purdijatno said as quoted by tempo.co after meeting with the House chairmanship at the House building in Senayan, Central Jakarta, on Wednesday.

Home Minister Tjahjo Kumolo accompanied Tedjo in the meeting, which lasted around 45 minutes. Among House leaders present at the meeting were Setya Novanto, Taufik Kurniawan and Agus Hermanto.

'€œIt was finally agreed that the President himself will explain the case,'€ said Tedjo.

Tedjo denied rumors that the government was pressured by the House to clarify Budi'€™s nomination withdrawal.

The minister said President Jokowi merely wanted to maintain open communication with the House leaders. '€œThere'€™s nothing wrong with holding a meeting to strengthen our bond over a cup of coffee, right?'€ he said.

During a plenary meeting on March 23, a number of House members urged Jokowi to explain why he canceled Budi'€™s nomination for the post of National Police chief.

The House'€™s legal commission said that unless Jokowi clarified Budi'€™s withdrawal, it would refuse to hold a confirmation hearing for Comr.Gen.Badrodin Haiti, who has been nominated by the President as the next police chief. (fsu/ebf)
