olice officers and firefighters prevented a man from jumping from the roof of a foot bridge connecting Plaza Semanggi shopping center, the Jakarta Police Headquarters and the Transjakarta shelter on Jl. Gatot Subroto in Central Jakarta on Saturday morning.
The rescue unit chief at the South Jakarta Fire Agency, M Arief, said that his team was able to stop the man jumping after talking to him from 10 p.m. on Friday night.
'We tried to negotiate with him. The Setiabudi Police chief even came to help,' he said as quoted by tribunnews.com.
Arief said the man had claimed that he had been on the roof of the bridge for four days but the police only saw him on Friday night. He said the man had refused to come down and threatened to jump from the bridge.
Arief said that on Saturday morning the Setiabudi Police chief, Adj. Sr. Comr. Audy Latuheru, suggested catching the man as they brought him food.
'We prepared to catch him at all corners. When he was focused on the person who brought the food, other personnel grabbed him,' he said.
Separately, Audy said the man claimed that he was depressed as he was being chased by gang members. 'However, we cannot confirm this statement. We are not even sure what his name is because he could not produce his ID card,' he said.
