Islands in focus: Warden hospitalized after machete attack

A

n official at the Kefamenanu penitentiary in Timor Tengah Utara regency in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) is in critical condition after receiving numerous machete wounds from an inmate on Saturday.

Habel Lusi Moruk, 48, was treated in intensive care at the Kefamenanu hospital after being severely hacked on his head, left shoulder and left hand.

NTT Police spokesperson Adj. Sr. Comr. Agus Santoso said Sunday that the victim was attacked inside the penitentiary by inmate Marthinus Subani, 27.

'€œWe have taken the inmate to the police headquarters for questioning. We have also questioned a number of witnesses. We want to know how the inmate got his hands on the machete,'€ Agus said. The motive of the attack, however, is as yet unclear.

Marthinus has twice been jailed for several murders using machetes. He murdered a resident of Ponu in 2009 and was jailed until 2013. After his release, he was imprisoned again for eight years for hacking two men to death in 2013.
