child of the indigenous nomadic Suku Anak Dalam community, also known as Orang Rimba, has been treated in the children's intensive care unit at Raden Mattaher General Hospital in Jambi city. He was referred from the Hamba Regional Hospital in Muara Bulian, Batanghari regency, for a lung infection.
One-year-old Betumpul, from the Menti Ngelembu community in Bathin XXIV district, Batanghari regency, was admitted to the hospital because his parents said they no longer wanted him to be treated at the Hamba hospital, where a number of Orang Rimba tribespeople have been treated, including two who died at the hospital.
'This is our tradition. It's taboo for us to stay in the same place if any of our group members die,' said Ngelembu on Thursday.
Ngelembu said he had resigned himself to the fate of the child and would agree to all medical measures being administered.
As many as 14 Orang Rimba tribespeople have died in the past three months, reportedly from various sicknesses and malnutrition.
