In the early years after 1998, the Jakarta elite tolerated Muslim radicals out of fear of losing votes. After all, Abdurrahman 'Gus Dur' Wahid was president then and the Islamists looked strong.
That terrible example of short-term thinking ended in the Bali bombings, which made half the world think the country was a violent terrorist's playground.

So what's the actual actions and regulations then? Only de-radicalization through some ineffective character-building programs? I don't see how this will work because Indonesian supporters of IS will think that there's no serious consequence for their actions other than being subject to attending some character-building program.
Does the government really have the will and the guts to create anti-terror laws that clearly classify any IS-related supports or activities as criminal actions and thereby punishable by severe penalties?
