EKANBARU: The Riau provincial administration is exploring opportunities to work together with the Norwegian government to develop freshwater fisheries, the potential of which have not been fully tapped. Both parties on Friday held a meeting in Pekanbaru, Riau, to discuss the cooperation.
Commercial counselor at the Norwegian Embassy in Indonesia Ole Schanke Eikum said the meeting had yet to produce any agreement as it was just an introduction to disclose both parties' interest.
'We have yet to discuss the fish species that would be studied and developed, as the meeting is still discussing the steps to be taken to open the road for cooperation between both parties,' said Eikum after the meeting.
'However, the meeting today was quite a milestone as it was our first time visiting Riau,' he added.
The meeting will be followed up with another meeting to formulate concrete cooperation regarding efforts to develop and improve the fisheries sector in Riau.
'The fisheries sector supports between 25 and 30 percent of our country's economy. We can share our knowledge with Riau,' said Eikum.
The Norwegian government will help Riau in developing the fisheries sector so it could become part of the province's economic basis. 'Fisheries still contribute only around 2 percent of Riau's economy, so we will help catch the lag,' he added.
