National scene: New PAN leadership looks for new building

J

AKARTA: The central board of the National Mandate Party (PAN) said the initiative to collect donations for the construction of a new party headquarters was a good idea, but it was never ordered by party chairman Zulkifli Hasan.

Chairman of the PAN faction at the House of Representatives Mulfahri Harahap said that, in fact, Zulkifli frowned upon the initiative.

'€œHe did not approve of the initiative, but this shows party members'€™ support,'€ Mulfahri said as quoted by tribunnews.com.

Party members started to collect donations for the construction of the new headquarters following the move by Zulkifli'€™s predecessor, Hatta Radjasa, to take back his assets from his party, including the party headquarters on Jl. TB Simatupang in South Jakarta.

Hatta lost the vote for party chairmanship in early March.

Zulkifli, the current People'€™s Consultative Assembly (MPR) speaker and a former forestry minister, beat incumbent Hatta in a close race by securing 292 votes, six votes ahead of Hatta, in a national congress on Monday night.

The donation campaign so far has collected Rp 1.1 billion (US$86,000).
