Asia Africa Conference aims to strengthen cooperation among developing countries: Minister

T

he Indonesian government will underline the importance of the South-South and Triangular cooperation for developing countries during 60th Asian-African Conference Commemoration (AACC) events, a minister has said.

Foreign Minister Retno LP Marsudi said South-South and Triangular cooperation was a form of solidarity among developing countries through which they could strengthen their developmental capacities.

'€œGrowing together is a must. South-South and Triangular cooperation becomes our tool to grow and develop together,'€ she said as quoted by kompas.com.

The minister was speaking at the opening of an exhibition on South-South and Triangular cooperation, which were part of the AACC events at the Jakarta Convention Center on Sunday.

Retno said that through South-South and Triangular cooperation, the government hoped the developmental gap among developing countries could be minimized. It is hoped that such cooperation could lead to peace and prosperity in developing countries, especially those in Asia and Africa.

The minister said Indonesia played a critical role in South-South and Triangular cooperation. It had hosted South-South and Triangular cooperation events, such as providing diplomatic training to representatives of Asian and African countries, as well as Latin America, several times. Indonesia has also supported the funding of South-South and Triangular cooperation activities.

Deputy Finance Minister Mardiasmo said South-South and Triangular cooperation was based on the spirit of accelerating development and the independence of developing countries.

The cooperation also has become a stepping stone for Indonesia to directly and indirectly support efforts to achieve prosperity and peace in developing countries.

'€œIn this regard, the finance minister plays two roles, namely cooperation in fiscal decentralization and in the capital market,'€ said Mardiasmo.

Meanwhile, National Development Planning Minister Adrinof Chaniago said Indonesia'€™s increased role in South-South and Triangular cooperation was also part of the National Mid-Term Development Plan (RPJMN) for 2015-2019.

He said the ministry would ensure that budgetary allocations aimed at strengthening South-South cooperation could be realized. (ebf)(++++)
