Asian-African Conference to discuss substance abuse

T

he 60th Asian-African Conference Commemoration is set to discuss a number of human and social development issues, including drug and narcotics abuse, one of the most serious problems Indonesia and many other countries face, an official has said.

'€œThis [drug abuse] is one of our biggest enemies. According to National Narcotics Agency (BNN) data, 33 people die of drug and narcotics misuse every day,'€ said Presidential Chief of Staff Luhut Panjaitan, who is also the conference'€™s organizing committee head, as quoted by kompas.com at the Jakarta Convention Center on Sunday.

Luhut said President Joko '€œJokowi'€ Widodo had agreed with the organizing of a Slank musical performance to send out a moral message for the need to fight drugs during the conference.

The Slank concert, themed '€œProsperity and peace without drugs: No more drugs in Asia, Africa and the World'€, is one of the conference events that will be held at Gelora Bung Karno Stadium in Senayan, Central Jakarta, on Sunday.

'€œSlank gives a moral message on the need for us to jointly fight drug abuse as it can affect anyone regardless of ethnicity or religious background,'€ said Luhut.

'€œI'€™ve seen that even a professor can fall victim to drug abuse. All can be affected. This concert is aimed at creating better future younger generations,'€ he went on.

It was projected that the Slank concert would attract 20,000 concert-goers. Besides the concert, Slank and other Indonesian musicians are set to write an open letter to all heads of state and government to promote drug eliminating issues as a main agenda discussed at the 60th Asian-African Conference Commemoration.
