thiopia and Indonesia have agreed to boost bilateral cooperation after vice foreign ministers from both countries met during the Asian-African Conference Commemoration at the Jakarta Convention Center on Monday.
'There's huge potential for the two countries to cooperate in the economy and trade, and we should take the chance,' Deputy Indonesian Foreign Minister AM Fachir said on Monday as quoted by Antara news agency.
The Foreign Ministry's data showed that the total trade between the two countries had been increasing, from US$94.1 million in 2010 to $106.8 million in 2011 and $381.3 million in 2012, before slightly falling to $349.1 million in 2013.
Ethiopia, the third biggest country in Africa, could be a strategic partner for Indonesia, Fachir added.
Ethiopian State Minister for Foreign Affairs Berhane Gebre-Christos embraced the possibility.
'Our cooperation, lasting for six decades, has been increasing over the years. We want to expand the good political relationship to the economy and trade, such as the cooperation on aviation that we are pursuing,' Gebre-Christos said, adding that he was open to the possibility for cooperation with the private sector in Indonesia.
The cooperation between Ethiopia and Indonesia began with Ethiopia's participation in the first Asian-African Conference in 1955 in Bandung.
In January, Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno LP Marsudi attended the 24th African Union summit in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. She was the first Indonesian foreign minister to attend an African Union summit and the first to visit Ethiopia since bilateral ties were established in 1974. (fsu/nvn)(++++)
