Your comments on the 60th commemoration of the Asian-African Conference in Bandung, West Java. The original conference in 1955 inspired solidarity among Asian and African nations and led to the formation of the Non-Aligned Movement:
The presence of about 35 heads of state next week for the 60th commemoration of the Asian-African Conference in Bandung, West Java, is indeed very timely for Indonesia.
Indonesia is a large archipelago and with all the experience it has accumulated over the past 70 years it indeed has reasons to do things better and right.
However, many grave obstacles can hinder our badly needed chances for economic progress, as such the religiously motivated prohibition of alcohol, which will surely jeopardize the tourism industry. This is the time and occasion to develop Indonesia's infrastructure to facilitate our economic development and the resulting exports to the Asian and African nations that we gathered together 60 years ago in Bandung.

I was in the Soviet Union in 1964 and met with most of the Asian and African armed forces students there.
I really feel that the conference in 1955 inspired solidarity of both regions. But I have to say that there is no relevance of the conference anymore to today's world.

What economic interests are served by African countries becoming closer to Indonesia?

The relevance of this conference will be the same as the relevance of the Non-Aligned Movement 60 years ago: i.e.,
another meaningless and costly get-together for politicians trying to improve their popularity ratings.

In my opinion the conference can show how good the relationship among the 35 nations is.
I hope other countries will do the same, and the world can be reconciled.
