ietnam's President Truong Tan Sang will arrive in Jakarta on Tuesday to attend the 60th anniversary of the Asian-African Conference Commemoration (AACC) in both Jakarta and Bandung, the Vietnamese Embassy in Jakarta announced.
'President Sang will arrive on Tuesday to attend the Asian-African Conference in Jakarta and Bandung," the embassy informed The Jakarta Post on Sunday night.
President Sang was invited by Indonesian President Joko 'Jokowi' Widodo to attend the historic conference, which will be also participated in by top Asian leaders like Chinese President Xi Jinpeng and Japanese Prime Minister Shinjo Abe, as well as leaders of Egypt, Iran, Pakistan, Jordan, South Africa and Zimbabwe.
During his four-day visit, besides attending the Asian-African summit, Sang is scheduled to meet President Jokowi and several leaders of Asian-African countries.
'Our President will have a meeting with the Indonesian President to discuss issues related to strengthening bilateral relations,' the embassy said.
It will not be the first meeting between Jokowi and Sang. They first met in Beijing on Nov. 10, 2014 on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit.
Vietnam is Indonesia's close friend and the only strategic partner among the 10-member ASEAN. The relations between both countries, which will celebrate 60 years since the establishment of diplomatic ties later this year, have been growing rapidly and they cooperate closely in the international arena.
Based on the Central Statistics Agency's data, bilateral trade stood at US$5.86 billion in 2014, a significant surge from $5.12 billion in 2013. The trade value was just $2.01 billion in 2009. Last year both Jokowi and Sang agreed to raise bilateral trade value to $10 billion by 2018.
Vietnam has shown support for most of Indonesia's international initiatives, be it the Bandung Conference in 1955, the ASEAN community or climate change initiatives. It was never absent from any of the three Asian-African summits.
The then Vietnamese prime minister Pham Van Dong attended the first Asian-African Conference in Bandung in April 1955. Again, then Vietnamese president Tran Duc Luong attended the 50th anniversary of the Asian-African Conference in Jakarta and Bandung in 2005. (++++)
