Govt studies using Pertalite to replace Premium

S

tate-Owned Enterprises Minister Rini Soemarmo has said the government is studying the benefits of utilizing a new fuel variant, namely the recently introduced Pertalite, to replace the current Premium.

'€œ[State oil and gas company] Pertamina has launched a new product, namely Pertalite. This has a higher Research Octane Number [RON] of 90 compared to Premium'€™s specification of RON 88,'€ Rini said as quoted by Antara news agency in Banyumas, Central Java, on Tuesday.

'€œThis is based on our consideration that we want to be more environmentally friendly in the future; so we are taking such a policy [of using Pertalite],'€ she added.

She said the government was fully aware that in terms of price, Premium, or fuel with RON 88 specification, was cheapest. '€œThat'€™s why we don'€™t want yet to remove it [Premium],'€ said Rini.

'€œIf RON 90 can be as cheap as RON 88, Premium will eventually not be used,'€ she added.

Rini said Pertalite or RON 90 fuel was much more environmentally friendly; however, the government would also ensure that utilizing the new fuel would not burden consumers.

The Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry'€™s ad hoc reform team for the oil and gas sector has recommended the elimination of RON 88 gasoline.

According to the team, gasoline with RON 88 specification was no longer used in many other countries and was hard to find in the market. Therefore, it said, RON 88 was in limited supply and the continued use of the product would only increase Pertamina'€™s procurement and blending costs. (ebf)(++++)
