he Hulu Sungai Utara administration in South Kalimantan is carrying out a number of programs to become a child-safe regency in an endeavor to emphasize the high prevalence of violence against children and women in the regency.
The head of the family planning section of the regency's population and family planning board, Aidillah, said in Amuntai on Tuesday that violence against children in the regency had reached an alarming level.
Data from the integrated service center of the women's empowerment and child protection agency showed that at least 20 cases of violence against children happened in the regency in 2012.
'The cases ranged from the rape of children by their own fathers to the beating of children to death,' Antara news agency quoted him as saying.
Aidillah also said the local administration would pay serious attention to children involved in drug trafficking and other crimes. 'The local administration and parents will supervise children and regulate their visits to Internet stands because information and uneducational videos on online media could have negative impacts on children,' he said.
He said the local administration would also provide open green space for children to play and exercise so that they could grow healthily. 'Besides, we will promote primary and secondary education among families to help improve the quality human resources in the regency.' (rms)(++++)
