Based on Pekanbaru Meteorology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), the Terra and Aqua satellites have revealed at least 53 hot spots in nine regencies.
Last month, less than a quarter of the number was detected in several regencies.
Pekanbaru BMKG head Sugarin said his team had detected 17 hot spots in Siak regency, 13 in Pelalawan, 10 in Bengkalis, five in Indragiri Hilir, four in Kampar and two each in Indragiri Hulu and Rokan Hilir.
He said 12 of the 53 hot spots were in forests in Bengkalis, Siak, Pelalawanm, Indragiri Hilir and Rokan Hilir.
'Based on observation, visibility around the hot spots is quite low although the air quality is still normal,' he said.
He said many people had complained about the heat as the temperature was far above normal.
'The temperature has reached 34.5 degrees Celsius, which is far above the normal 29 degrees,' he added.
The government has issued a strict regulation to discourage farmers and plantation companies from clearing land by fire as in past years, forest fires have disrupted air traffic, posed health problems and disrupted activities in neighboring countries Malaysia and Singapore. (++++)
