New team to crack down on fictitious tax refunds

T

he Finance Ministry's directorate general of taxation officially launched on Tuesday a satgas (special working team) aimed at eliminating pervasive fabricated documents that can lead to fictitious claims for tax refunds.

In a press statement, the office said the team was a breakthrough in putting an end to the practice, as it would use comprehensive and systematic preventive measures.

According to the office, the satgas started its work in June 2014 and has so far managed to prevent fictitious claims worth Rp 220 billion (US$17 million) in the Jakarta area.

The satgas has also forced 80.7 percent of some 403 taxpayers to admit to their wrongdoings in trying to forge documents.

This year, the satgas will expand its operations outside Jakarta, with Banten among its top priorities.

"[Making a] fictitious claim is a crime that carries a maximum of six years'€™ imprisonment and fines worth four times the unpaid tax debts," said the office in a statement.

"However, the directorate will first prioritize persuasive measures by clarifying the claims," it said. (ren)(++++)
