Police investigate kidnappings of entrepreneur, son

T

he Jakarta Police said on Tuesday the alleged abductors of Thalib Abbas, a 78-year-old businessman freed by the police on Sunday evening, had probably also kidnapped his son, Kemal Rafli in 2012.

Jakarta Police violent crime detectives unit head Adj. Sr. Comr. Herry Heryawan said that before Thalib'€™s abduction occurred, the suspects, who were known to be a group of debt collectors were pursuing Kemal for unsettled debts.

He added that the incident began when the gang leader, identified only by his initials DDQ asked MAM to allow DDQ's debt-collecting team to press Kemal for payment of debts. To seal the deal DDQ showed MAM a picture of Kemal being held in 2012. MAM agreed to the debt collector searching for Kemal to pay his debts.

"We had no previous report of an abduction involving Kemal in 2012. We have advised Kemal or his family to file a report," said Herry.

As reported earlier, DDQ and six other suspects, identified only as S, THM, S alias J, ED, P and M, forcibly took Thalib from his home in Jagakarsa, South Jakarta, in the evening of April 14. They took away the businessman after they failed to find his son, Kemal.

The abductors demanded a ransom of Rp 400 million (US$30,879) to be paid to a Mandiri bank account under the name of Muhammad Arifin Ilham, to whom Thalib'€™s family had paid Rp 25 million in three transfers.

Herry said the police were still investigating both abduction cases and the alleged involvement of two military personnel, who were still at large, in Thalib'€™s kidnapping.

"We have communicated and cooperated with the Jakarta Military Command [Kodam Jaya] in pursuing the two military members," he said. (prm/ebf)(+++)
