he National Police's Densus 88 counterterrorism squad arrested a terrorist suspect in Bulutironge, a village in Pitumpanua Siwa district, Wajo regency, South Sulawesi, on Tuesday.
The suspect, identified as Ambo Ece, 36, was on the squad's most wanted list (DPO) and was a fugitive for some time.
Wajo Police chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Masrur confirmed the arrest of the terrorist suspect. "At around 6.30 a.m. local time on Tuesday, the Densus 88 team arrested Ambo Ece, a resident of Pitumpanua Siwa district, Wajo regency, as a terrorist suspect," he said.
Masrur further explained the Densus 88 team, comprising 14 officers, had coordinated its arrest plan with the Wajo Police precinct.
He said a number of Wajo Police personnel were deployed to back up the Densus 88 team by securing the arrest location. "The arrest ran smoothly. There was no resistance from the suspect," said Masrur.
South Sulawesi Police spokesman Adj.Sr.Comr.Andi Masmini said the suspect was allegedly involved in the killing of two police officers in Poso Police officers.
"Ambo Ece was involved in the murder of Adj.First Insp.Sudirman and Brig.Andi Sapa in Tamanjeka Poso, Central Sulawesi," he said.
The two Poso policemen were declared missing on Oct.8, 2012, their bodies were found on Oct.16, 2012.
Ambo Ece was a member of the East Indonesia Mujahideen (MIT) terrorist group led by Daeng Koro and Susanto, which had been operating in Poso. He was reported to have once received paramilitary training in Walenrang and Poso.
Masrur said Ambo Ece was a native of Bangsalae in Batu-batu subdistrict, Pitumpanua Siwa district, Wajo regency. He had long been absent from his village and had returned back to his hometown several days before the arrest.
Densus 88 brought the suspect to Makassar before flying him to Jakarta for more intensive interrogation, especially over his alleged involvement in terrorism in Poso. (ebf)(+++)
