fire at the Molotabu steam power plant (PLTU) in Bone Bolango regency, Gorontalo, on April 14, has led to rotating blackouts across the province of a duration of between four and seven hours every day.
The manager of the local branch of state power company PLN, Putu Eka Astawa, said that no casualties were reported in the fire, but the 30-megawatt PLTU had been completely paralyzed.
'We apologize to the public for the inconvenience. The rotating blackouts are inevitable, especially in the morning and at night,' said Eka on Thursday.
He said the peak load period in day time was between 55 and 60 MW, while the peak load at night was 82 MW. The deficit could not be offset by diesel generators, the combined capacity of which amounted only to 60 MW.
Eka said PLN was making efforts to repair the damage as soon as possible.
Zulfikli, who runs a photocopy business in Gorontalo said he had suffered losses due to the power outages. 'The blackouts take place in the morning, noon and night, or seven hours in total.' he said.
