ecurity officers from the Riau Islands Police's water police unit (Polair) arrested the Malaysian-flagged tanker MT Urban Success while it was transporting 800,000 kiloliters of diesel fuel in the Lingga waters on Friday.
The vessel was allegedly transporting fuel from Palembang, South Sumatra, to Singapore without proper documents, a move that had the potential to inflict almost Rp 10 billion (US$770,000) in financial losses to the state.
Riau Islands Police chief Brig.Gen.Arman Depari told The Jakarta Post on Sunday that the MT Urban Success's arrest was the police's biggest sea arrest in the last two years.
'We had been spying on the vessel for two weeks before the arrest. This is the biggest fuel smuggling vessel we have busted in the last two years,' said Arman.
He said the police were focused on eliminating a number of criminal practices on the Riau Islands.
MT Urban Success, a tanker vessel weighing 740 gross tons (GT), was captained by a suspect identified only as YS and had seven crew members.
The vessel, its captain and all crew members have been taken into custody at the Polair headquarters for further questioning. (ebf)(++++)
