ice President Jusuf Kalla has said the Indonesian government's decision to stick with its plan to execute 10 death row inmates is merely based on its adherence to the law.
'We are carrying out our rules. Of course, we have to respect their home countries; but, we also must adhere to Indonesian law,' he said as quoted by Antara news agency in Jakarta on Monday.
Earlier, the government announced the imminent execution of the group of death row inmates, who were mostly convicted on drug trafficking charges. The executions are expected to take place simultaneously on Nusakambangan prison island on Tuesday.
The planned death executions have drawn strong protests from governments of countries, such as Australia and France, whose citizens will be executed, triggering worries that the executions would taint relations between Indonesia and those countries.
The Attorney General's Office (AGO) has released the names of 10 death row inmates included in a second batch of executions under President Joko 'Jokowi' Widodo's administration.
They include Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran, two Australians known as ringleaders of the so-called Bali Nine drug ring; Raheem Agbaje Salami of Nigeria; and Zainal Abidin of Indonesia. Also in the group are Serge Areski Atlaoui (France), Rodrigo Gularte (Brazil), Silvester Obiekwe Nwaolise alias Mustofa (Nigeria), Martin Anderson alias Belo (Ghana), Okwudili Oyatanze (Nigeria) and Mary Jane Fiesta Veloso of the Philippines.
