Landslides kill 338 across RI last year

Landslides claimed 338 lives in Indonesia last year, according to the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB).

Meanwhile, BNPB spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said on Monday that up to Apr. 25 this year, 46 people had been killed in landslides.

He added that some 40.9 million people living in 274 districts or cities throughout the country were vulnerable to landslides. "Disaster mitigation efforts must be intensified in those regions," Sutopo said as quoted by Antara news agency.

Mitigation efforts could include installing early warning system (EWS) devices. However, of hundreds of thousands of EWS devices needed throughout the country, the government had managed to install only around 100 units so far, Sutopo said.

BNPB chairman Syamsul Maarif said the agency was prioritizing the completion of a master plan on landslide disaster risk reduction in 2015.

As well as the installation of EWS devices, the master plan also emphasized capacity building, community empowerment and the promotion of disaster mitigation efforts, Syamsul said. (++++)
