Police crack down on City Council building

T

he corruption directorate of the police'€™s Detective Corps has cracked down on the City Council'€™s office building as part of its investigation into a graft case related to the procurement of uninterruptible power supply (UPS) units for schools.

'€œThe raid is still going on,'€ Sr. Com. Muhammad Ikram said on Monday.

Ikram declined to mention which rooms in the office building were raided and only said a room occupied by several councilors of the 2009-2014 term of office was raided because the councilors were believed to know something about the project.

'€œWe are looking for documents needed to uncover the alleged graft in the UPS project,'€ kompas.com quoted him as saying.

The police have named two officials from the provincial administration as suspects in the case. They were identified as Alex Usman and Zaenal Suleman, two officials from the primary and secondary division of the education agency in West and Central Java who made a commitment on the UPS procurement with the council.

Detective Corps chief Comr. Gen. Budi Waseso said the police were still investigating the involvement in the case of private companies supplying the devices.

Developing on a conflict with the City Council over the draft 2015 city budget, governor Basuki '€œAhok'€ Tjahaja Purnama revealed that the council also allocated Rp 188 billion to procure UPS devices in the 2014 budget but the devices had never been purchased. (rms)(++++)
