oreign Minister Retno Marsudi has highlighted the importance for ASEAN to accelerate the settlement of territorial disputes both on land and at sea to maintain the region's stability.
She said it was also important to continue to manage the security situation in the South China Sea.
The minister made the statement in a session on the ASEAN security and political community during the ASEAN Ministerial Meeting in Kuala Lumpur on Sunday, as reported by Antara.
During the session, ASEAN ministers urged all parties to show self-restraint and not to carry out any activity that could increase tensions. They also called for the implantation of the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties (DOC) fully and effectively and to immediately complete the formulation of a code of conduct in the South China Sea.
Furthermore, Retno floated the creation of an ASEAN legal instrument to increase the protection of migrant workers and their families, as mandated by the ASEAN Declaration on the Protection and Promotion of the Rights of Migrant Workers. (ebf)
