Text your say: Deputy chief Comr. Gen. Budi Gunawan

Budi Gunawan - JP/DON

Your comments on the inauguration of Comr. Gen. Budi Gunawan as the deputy National Police chief after his prior nomination as police chief sparked public opposition because of his suspicious bank accounts:

What is there to think? What difference does it make? Show me one politician or officer who doesn'€™t have a suspicious background!

Philippe Marland

Is he the best candidate this country can produce?

Eddy Arjuna Zainy

The police, lawmakers and other supporting departments defied logic and disrespected the people who try and abide by law and justice in Indonesia.

We should agree with Budi'€™s inauguration as the deputy police chief because police chief Gen. Badrodin Haiti has made political decisions well in the police environment and knows with whom he can work together to lead the National Police smoothly, despite the public discussing his suspicious accounts for the last few months.

Trust me, the Indonesian people are noticing and counting. This is going to blow up. President Joko '€œJokowi'€ Widodo is going to be thrown out. Much more is going on at the grassroots level than the media is reporting and more is being organized. It'€™s not at a critical mass yet, but anger is building.

The only thing informed Indonesians disagree about is the time frame. Will the explosion come in one month or two years? But all agree it will blow. Megawati Soekarnoputri is too much to bear for long. I am praying it will be peaceful and controlled.

Those with belief in God, please join me.

I am seriously taken aback and disgusted by the news, although admittedly this appointment has been looming on the horizon for a while. This is a willful act, a farce, and basically flipping a big bird to the public, as well as to Jokowi.

Budi is still under investigation by the police, but that did not hinder the Rank and Promotion Council for High-Ranking Officers (Wanjakti) to have him, according to other news sources, as the one and only candidate nominated.

Something smells extremely fishy here! And I don'€™t like it at all. Personally, I think this is the beginning of something very big '€” a huge scandal looming there.

But then again, the public will not stage any huge demonstrations against his appointment. I'€™m sure about that.

They will go on the street when there are troubles with the soccer association, but for something which could really impact their lives severely, they are either like the older generation and too afraid, or like the younger generations (except a few NGOs), and are too busy with their smartphones and their social media to care about such a farce.

One step forward, three steps back. Indonesia will get there eventually, but progress will be much faster if it can stop making mistakes like this.

It'€™s just sickening. We have all been played like fools.

Abdul Malik

How can Jokowi drop Budi as a candidate for top cop and then give him the job as a deputy; who is the person who will take over his job when he is not there?

J. Boy

So the acquittal, based on a non-existent law and highly dubious formalities ('€œnot a law enforcer or high ranking official when in charge of police career center'€) makes the facts (millions of unexplained dollars and an ongoing police investigation) go away?

This is a slap in the face of any intelligent and educated being, and it is clearly the deal/desired outcome. Jokowi is to be blamed for accepting it.

Kantisini

In any country, law and order is the pillar to ensuring a harmonious society. Indonesia is plagued with endemic corruption, which has frustrated its citizens who want progress. Economic improvement, meanwhile, is closely tied to a country'€™s fair and unbiased enforcement of law and order. While Budi is not guilty until a judgment has been made, his credibility and integrity have been made doubtful by the firm allegations made by Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK).

It will, therefore, be wise not to involve him in such a senior police position until he is vindicated. The KPK should not be hindered, to allow their investigation be completed, and if formal charges are made, to allow the court to hear and make a proper judgment.

If Budi is found to be not guilty of any offense, he can pursue the KPK for significant damages in tarnishing and discrediting him. Budi can then be reconsidered for the top police post in a year'€™s time, when the incumbent is due for retirement. This would have been a sensible, pragmatic and proper handling.

I think Badrodin is creating a time bomb ready to explode by approving Budi as the new deputy police chief. Let us wait and see.
