overnor Basuki 'Ahok' Tjahaja Purnama called on Jakartans on Monday to be on the alert for strong winds that could topple unstable trees in the capital. The warning was issued following the Meteorology, Geophysics and Climatology Agency's weather forecast indicating that strong winds would hit Greater Jakarta ' particularly South Jakarta, Depok and Bogor ' over the next three days.
Ahok also warned residents not to park their vehicles or to take shelter under trees during rain.
He revealed that the city administration was monitoring aging trees across the capital. 'We will replace old trees with new ones,' he said as quoted by Antara news agency. According to the Parks and Cemetery Agency, there were 100,000 vulnerable trees in the capital as of 2014, mostly located in South and East Jakarta.
