ndonesia had the world's fifth highest number of people dying in traffic accidents last year after China, India, Afghanistan and Nigeria, an official said on Tuesday.
AKBP Djuwito Purnomo from the National Police Traffic Corps said the number had increased to 28,000 at a rate of 72 people per day last year even though the occurrence of such accidents declined to 95,247 compared to 2013.
"With the number [of the victims], Indonesia ranked fifth in the world," he said in Bandung, West Java, as quoted by kompas.com, adding that most of the victims were aged between 15 and 35 years old.
He said that most of the fatalities occurred on the island of Java and mostly related to motorcycle accidents.
Djuwito said the police faced difficulties in lowering the number of fatalites because 81 percent of the accidents were caused by human error.
In 2013 the number of accidents was around 100,000, with 26,000 fatalities.(+++)
