overnor Basuki 'Ahok' Tjahaja Purnama used Twitter on Wednesday to clarify a controversial statement on legalizing prostitution that drew criticism from many officials and residents.
Earlier this week, following the exposure of prostitution taking place in apartments and boarding houses in the city, Ahok suggested that his side would likely legalize prostitution in certain areas to monitor the activity and minimize the spread of sexually transmitted infections.
He also suggested that sex workers be given certifications and periodic health checks.
'The localization plan is just a plan. We already knew from the start that it would be impossible [to legalize prostitution in Jakarta]. Residents surely do not want the practice of prostitution in their neighborhoods,' Ahok tweeted via his official account @basuki_btp on Wednesday.
