orruption Eradication Commission (KPK) investigator Novel Baswedan has said the recent move by the National Police's Criminal Investigation Directorate to arrest him is a form of criminalization, as the police did not carry out a proper investigation.
'I firmly state that this is criminalization. I don't see [the legal mechanism] as a proper investigation process,' he said on Sunday as quoted by kompas.com.
He claimed to have expressed objection to the police's taking him to Bengkulu for a reconstruction of a case involving the alleged torture of a swallow's-nest thief in 2004, but he was powerless after being detained briefly at the police's Mobile Brigade (Brimob) headquarters, widely known as a detention center for terrorist suspects, in Depok, West Java.
Novel is reported to have refused to take part in the reconstruction because he claimed that he had not been present during the alleged torture.
'I was detained, so I had to come, whether I wanted to or not. But as a suspect, I have the right to refuse to participate in the reconstruction,' he said.
Novel was arrested on Friday as a suspect in the alleged assault case that took place when he was serving as the Bengkulu Police's detective chief, and was flown to Bengkulu for the reconstruction.
The National Police officially suspended the detention of Novel on Saturday after an agreement was reached by leaders of the KPK and the National Police. (fsu/hhr)(+++)
