Ship hits atoll in Batam waters

A cargo ship with 10 crew members almost sank on Sunday morning after hitting a coral atoll in Batam waters off Riau province.

Tanjung Pinang Navy base commander First Adm. Sulistiyanto said the 10 Eka Cahaya ship crewmen were saved by a joined Search and Rescue (SAR) team.

"The Eka Cahaya almost sank near Pemping Island. The SAR team, together with local people, immediately launched a rescue operation to save the crew members," he told The Jakarta Post.

The ship was on its way from Jambi to Bintan and was transporting construction materials.(+++)
