President Joko âJokowiâ Widodo has called on the Workers Social Security Agency (BPJS BPJS Ketenagakerjaan) to use more of the funds collected from workers to carry out activities aimed at improving workersâ welfare, instead of depositing them in financial institutions
resident Joko 'Jokowi' Widodo has called on the Workers Social Security Agency (BPJS BPJS Ketenagakerjaan) to use more of the funds collected from workers to carry out activities aimed at improving workers' welfare, instead of depositing them in financial institutions.
He said that of the Rp 180 trillion funds collected from workers, only 5 percent was used to develop housing for workers.
'For instance, BPJS Ketenagakerjaan has assets worth Rp 180 trillion, not Rp 180 billion. But only 5 percent has been used for housing investment,' he said when opening the congress of the Confederation of Indonesian Prosperity Trade Unions (KSBSI) in Pondok Gede, East Jakarta, on Monday.
The President said that in other countries, around 50 percent of funds collected from social security participants, was used to improve workers' welfare and therefore the agency should change its current system.
'If BPJS Ketenagakerjaan allocated 40 to 50 percent of its assets to build houses for workers, how many houses would it be able to build? Try to count them, please,' he told the audience.
The President said a bigger portion of the funds collected by the agency were deposited in financial institutions because of the absence of regulations and therefore he would discuss this issue with labor union leaders before making the best scheme to benefit workers.
'Funds collected by BPJS Ketenagakerjaan from workers must be productive, not saved. We need a breakthrough if we want social security funds to give maximum benefit to workers,' he said as quoted by kompas.com. (rms)(+++)
