he government is preparing measures to anticipate conflicts that are likely to emerge as a result of the foreseeable ban against the Golkar Party and the United Development Party (PPP) to participate in the upcoming simultaneous local elections.
"We are preparing for the worst scenario that might happen because of the difficulty to achieve peace [among conflicting factions within Golkar and the PPP]," Coordinating Political, Legal and Security Affairs Minister Tedjo Edy Purdijatno said on the sidelines of a national meeting held to discuss the elections that are to take place in December.
Tedjo declined to discuss details, but highlighted that the government had recorded indications resulting from ongoing infighting within Golkar and PPP that could spread to their supporters on the grassroots level all across the archipelago.
"Thus, we really hope that both parties can achieve a peaceful agreement to end the fights," Tedjo added. (hhr)(+++)
