ommunications and Information Minister Rudiantara has disclosed that the government will start realigning the 1,800 MHz frequency on Monday in preparation for the application of fourth-generation (4G) mobile services.
"The realignment of the 1,800 MHz frequency will start on Monday and is projected to take place in six months. It will start not from Java, but North Maluku," Rudiantara said on Sunday evening as quoted by kompas.com.
"The realignment will start in North Maluku [...] meaning that the government and mobile phone operators will no longer be Java-centric. We start building from the east," he said.
As part of the realignment, Rudiantara has coordinated with the National Consumers Protection Agency (BNKP) on the dissemination of information about any possible impacts during the realignment process. The impacts that may arise may be in the form of a temporary worsening quality of services.
The minister said that his ministry has been informed by the operators who are to realign the 1,800-MHz frequency through the cluster system or step-wise method about where there will be step-by-step interchangeable frequency migrations.
After the realignment of the 1,800-MHz frequency, the next target will be the implementation of the 2,100-MHz and 2,300-MHz frequencies, he said.
"Next year we will focus on the application of the 2,100-MHz and 2,300-MHz frequencies. We will later digitalize broadcasts [...] after moving from analog to digital systems, the frequency will be used for broadband," he added. (hhr)
