wo children sustained burns after Sebastian Manuputi, a worker, allegedly set himself on fire inside the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium during International Labor Day celebrations on Friday.
Maratul Choirul Istiqomah, a 3-year-old girl, and Muhammad Choirul Arif, a 13-year-old boy, were taken to Dr. Mintohardjo Hospital in Central Jakarta for burns to their bodies and faces. The two are the children of beverage sellers Parsidi and Suwarti.
Jakarta Health Agency staff member Eko Wahyudi confirmed that both victims had been taken to the hospital. 'I have been informed that the victims were already inside the ambulance for treatment,' he said on Friday as quoted by tribunnews.com, adding that the girl suffered burns to 15 percent of her body while the boy suffered 10 percent.
The children's mother Suwarti said the last time she saw her children before the incident was when they went with their father, who sold beverages at the event attended by thousands of workers.
'They were following their father, working. I didn't know if they later went to watch the concert,' she said.
On May 1, the Confederation of Indonesian Workers' Unions (KSPI) held the May Day Fiesta, a music concert in celebration of Labor Day. Musician Ahmad Dhani was singing when Sebastian fell from a platform, with flames covering his body.
A witness, Taufik, said he was near the VVIP stage.
'People were screaming; they saw somebody entwined in black cloth, burning. Ahmad Dhani was singing his third song,' he said.
The case was handled by the Jakarta Police, who suspected that Sebastian intended to burn himself to death.
