he executive director of the Centre for Climate Risk and Opportunity Management (CCROM) in South Asia and the Pacific, Rizaldi Boer, has said that areas of East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) are at risk of becoming a desert due to low rainfall and widespread mining activities.
'Based on research, the areas prone to becoming wasteland are Sabu Island and the eastern part of Sumba Island as a result of low rainfall,' Rizaldi told the media on May 4.
He said the process, which was evident, was a result of low rainfall and high water evaporation in both regions.
'The bigger the difference, the drier the regions will become and they will likely turn into deserts,' said Rizaldi.
