Deputy House Speaker Fadli Zon says that the legislative complex in Senayan, Central Jakarta, needs to rebuild its library and museum to make them more available to the public
eputy House Speaker Fadli Zon says that the legislative complex in Senayan, Central Jakarta, needs to rebuild its library and museum to make them more available to the public.
He said that it was 'high time' that the legislative complex, which houses the DPR, the People's Representative Council (MPR) and Regional Representatives Council (DPD), should be revamped in order to improve its interaction with the wider public and the House's work performance.
He underlined the importance of rebuilding the library as it serves as a valuable trove of information that could be shared between legislators and the public. He said that the current DPR library is underwhelming and suggests that the revamped library should be open to the public, like the Library of Congress in the United States.
Aside from the library, he said the need to redevelop the museum is also important.
'Because this project will be funded by the government, a state-owned enterprise should take part in the project. We want a legislative complex that is akin to that of the United States Capitol Building or the UK's [Palace of Westminster],' Fadli said.
Another institution that Fadli said is needed is a research center to accommodate the 78 researchers currently housed in a small area of the DPR complex. A research center, he argued, is important as a think tank that can directly interact with legislators. (rms)(+++)
