Around the world: France-RI ties '€˜normal'€™ despite Atlaoui case

F

rench Ambassador to Indonesia Corinne Breuze said Tuesday that relations between France and Indonesia remained normal despite the postponement of death row inmate Serge Atlaoui'€™s execution.

The ambassador explained that relations were normal while awaiting a decision on the French national'€™s case review request from the Jakarta State Administrative Court (PTUN).

His appeal had saved him from being executed along with eight other drug convicts on Nusakambangan prison island.

'€œWe lodged an appeal that is still ongoing and the lawyers are still working on it because we have some issues on the judicial aspect,'€ Breuze told The Jakarta Post on Tuesday.

Atlaoui, 51, was crossed off a list of death row inmates executed at the wee hours of April 29, allowing an outstanding legal appeal to challenge President Joko '€œJokowi'€ Widodo'€™s clemency rejection.

Atlaoui'€™s legal team filed the lawsuit with the PTUN shortly after his case review appeal was rejected last week.

The police busted Atlaoui when they raided a factory producing ecstasy in Tangerang, Banten, in 2005.

The French citizen was subsequently convicted in 2007 for the possession of 138 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine, 290 kg of ketamine and 316 drums of precursor substances.

Atlaoui has repeatedly denied the charges; saying that he was installing industrial machinery in what he thought was an acrylics factory.
