he Environment and Forestry Ministry has provided an additional Rp 50 million (US$3,850) in aid to speed up the construction of a dike to prevent peatland from drying out in Sungai Tohor village, Meranti Islands regency, Riau.
In a follow up to President Joko 'Jokowi' Widodo's visit in November last year, Environment and Forestry Minister Siti Nurbaya handed the assistance funding to Sungai Tohor community representative Abdul Manan on Wednesday. The additional aid will be used to build a wooden barrier on the Paret Kekat River, a tributary of the Tohor River, to prevent seawater from contaminating surrounding sago farms.
According to Manan, during last year's visit, Jokowi handed Rp 300 million in cash aid and all of the funds were used to build 13 timber barriers.
'The entire project was completed in April this year by the local community. I sent the financial accountability report to the President earlier this month,' Manan told The Jakarta Post after a meeting with Siti at the Sultan Syarif Kasim II Airport in Pekanbaru.
