More than 1,000 Indonesians remain in war-torn Yemen

As many as 1,194 Indonesians are estimated to still be in war-torn Yemen, Indonesian Ambassador to Yemen Wajid Fauzi said on Thursday.

Wajid said the Indonesians were in relatively safe areas like Tarim and Al Mukalla. "About 250 of them supposedly haven't registered themselves [with the embassy]," he said as quoted by Antara news agency.

Wajid said that if the situation in the safe areas deteriorated and the Indonesians wanted to be evacuated, the government would facilitate the operation through the border areas.

He also said that the Indonesian embassy was temporarily operating out of Al Hudaida, since the embassy building in Sanaa was hit by a bomb on April 20.

The ambassador said there was no guarantee civilians were safe in Yemen at present.

The Foreign Ministry had recorded more than 4,000 Indonesian citizens living in Yemen before the civil war.(++++)
