Mexican soccer club fined after fans rush field

A Mexican soccer team has been fined nearly $18,000 (268,470 pesos) after some fans ran onto the field during a league game.

The city of Guadalajara announced the fine against the soccer club Atlas on Monday, one day after it lost 1-4 to rival Chivas.

Guadalajara's general secretary Jesus Lomeli Rosas said the fine was for violation of city ordinances, but the team could face additional sanctions from the league. He noted that the stadium's security was the responsibility of private security hired by the host team.

The fans who scrambled onto the field in the second half forced the game's suspension.

Police chief Noe Camarillo said 10 people were arrested. Five members of the private security force were injured in the melee.(*)
