Text your say: New deal for Papua

strong>Your comments on a breakthrough made by President Joko '€œJokowi'€ Widodo for Papuans that includes opening access for foreign media to Papua and West Papua provinces, freeing political prisoners and launching a number of projects:

They largely do not want to be Indonesians. If Melanesians remain part of Indonesia they will be completely replaced and those cultures will be lost forever.

The framework of the Republic of Indonesia does not truly respect indigenous peoples, why should they stay?

The only solution is disintegration of Indonesia, a country that does not now nor has ever truly respected its indigenous peoples outside of a certain majority from a small island.

Brave words, but nothing will change. Indonesia will continue to keep Papua closed off from the outside world and will continue refuse to allow international agencies and journalists to report on what is happening and what dreadful things have happened there.

If Jokowi is true to his word (and he won'€™t be), then international scrutiny will turn Papua into another East Timor, with world opinion being appalled at the Indonesian colonialism that has occurred.

James Roderick

What happens in Papua also happens in all places in Indonesia even in Jakarta.

Look at the criminalization of KPK commissioners and investigations by the police. Restrictions happen everywhere in this country. So the deal should not only be for Papuans, but should also be for other Indonesians living all over the archipelago.

Jokowi'€™s caring approach is indeed timely if not a bit too late. Of all the leaders during the past seven decades it takes President Jokowi to realize the truth.

The President is facing a tremendous task and he will need the best ministers to accomplish his goals.
